Gunfire shattered the quiet around Hillsboro's quirky Airplane Home late Saturday night, leaving two people shot and a suspect detained, authorities said.
The shooting happened near the converted Boeing 727 that sits on a rural property outside Hillsboro and has long been a regional curiosity. Emergency crews rushed the two injured people to nearby hospitals. Officials have not yet released their conditions.
The plane, a full-sized jet that has been reimagined as a private residence, has drawn curious visitors and photographers for years.
According to KPTV, the shooting took place "near midnight Saturday," and officers detained a person at or near the scene. Investigators remained on site Sunday, working to piece together what led up to the violence.
What Is the Airplane Home?
The Airplane Home is a decommissioned Boeing 727 that owner Bruce Campbell transported to a wooded parcel outside Hillsboro, then converted into a private home that also welcomes respectful visitors.
As detailed on AirplaneHome.com, the property sits at 15270 SW Holly Hill Road. The site includes driving directions along with visitor guidelines that urge guests to follow parking rules and be considerate of neighbors. The unusual sight of a commercial jet tucked into the woods has made the spot a magnet for out-of-town visitors and camera-toting locals alike.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims or the suspect, and it is not clear whether any charges have been filed.
KPTV reported that detectives were still processing the scene and interviewing witnesses on Sunday, and that the investigation remains active.
