Gunfire turned a routine school bus ride into a crime scene Tuesday afternoon in southwest Atlanta, when a bus was struck and a man was found nearby with a gunshot wound. No students or the driver were reported injured, but the bus itself did not escape damage.
Atlanta officers were called out shortly before 3:30 p.m. to the 2600 block of Campbellton Road SW, where they found the wounded man and realized the school bus had also been hit, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Police told reporters the man was alert, conscious and breathing. Investigators have not publicly shared any information about a possible motive.
Where it happened
Campbellton Road cuts through several neighborhoods in southwest Atlanta and has been the backdrop for multiple violent incidents and traffic crashes in recent years. Local coverage has turned the corridor into a recurring focus for both law enforcement and community safety advocates. The pattern of past shootings and collisions along Campbellton Road, documented by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, helps explain why residents tend to pay close attention when police lights cluster along the street.
Past incidents involving buses and chases
This is not the first time a school bus has been caught up in violence or police activity in the area. In November 2023, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that state troopers pursuing a stolen vehicle were involved in a crash that struck a school bus on Campbellton Road. That incident prompted an independent GBI review. In its release, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation laid out how quickly a traffic stop and chase can spill over onto residential streets and school routes.
What police say and what’s next
So far, police have not released any details on possible suspects or a motive in Tuesday’s shooting, and the investigation remains active, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Investigators are asking anyone with information to reach out to the Atlanta Police Department or submit tips through the department’s non-emergency channels to help piece together what led up to the gunfire along Campbellton Road.
