Gunfire tore through an off-campus gathering near Illinois State University early Sunday, leaving six people wounded and jolting a quiet Normal neighborhood awake in the middle of the night. Two of the victims are ISU students, and two are juveniles, according to authorities.
Normal police said shots rang out around 2:40 a.m. in the 700 block of Franklin Avenue, near the southern edge of the ISU campus. Officers arrived to find at least six people suffering from gunshot wounds. All of the injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and police said the scene was quickly contained.
The shooting drew a heavy law enforcement response. Bloomington police, the McLean County Sheriff's Office, Illinois State University Police, and Illinois State Police all assisted Normal officers. Investigators are asking anyone with information or video from the scene to contact Normal Police Detective Kyle McComber at 309-433-3415, according to NBC Chicago.
Off-campus tension near ISU
Off-campus gatherings near ISU have been on law enforcement's radar in recent years. A 2025 incident at the Bone Student Center prompted emergency alerts and a large police response, as reported by WGLT and a previous campus shooting write-up. Campus and local officers routinely coordinate on late-night disturbances around the university, a pattern that continued in Sunday's response.
Investigators search for answers
Normal police said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. As of Sunday, no arrests had been made, and no suspects had been publicly identified while detectives canvassed the neighborhood and combed through evidence.
Authorities are urging anyone who saw what happened or who has video from the gathering to come forward as they work to pin down a motive, according to NBC Chicago.
Investigators remained on scene through the aftermath, collecting evidence as residents and students tried to process a chaotic night that could have ended much worse. Anyone with information is asked to contact Normal police.
