Tony Moore, 65, has died at Sharp Memorial Hospital from injuries he suffered after he was hit while crossing a busy La Mesa street last month, according to officials.
As reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune, Moore was struck by a motorcycle on Feb. 22 while crossing El Cajon Boulevard at Jessie Avenue. Paramedics took him to Sharp Memorial, where the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office recorded that he was pronounced dead on March 24.
The county medical examiner said that a ruling on the cause of his death remains on hold pending completion of postmortem examinations, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances of the crash.
Intersection Had Safety Upgrades
The crash happened at El Cajon Boulevard and Jessie Avenue, an intersection where the City of La Mesa recently installed a HAWK pedestrian signal intended to help people cross the busy corridor. That crossing is also listed as a priority in the city's Local Road Safety Plan, detailed by the City of La Mesa, which lays out targeted improvements for recurring crash sites.
Broader Safety Context
Advocates and regional reporting have noted that pedestrian deaths have climbed in recent years despite Vision Zero-style commitments, pushing community groups to call for faster engineering fixes and traffic calming measures on major corridors, as reported by Axios San Diego. Intersections like El Cajon Boulevard often appear on local safety lists due to repeated collisions.
Investigators continue to review the collision while the medical examiner completes postmortem exams. The county will release a final determination once those tests are finished.
