
Police say a 34-year-old man was shot late Monday night on the Red Line platform at the Sox‑35th station on Chicago’s South Side and was taken to Christ Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition. The suspected shooter ran off, and no arrests had been reported by police that night.
According to authorities, the victim had been riding a southbound Red Line train when a verbal argument broke out. An unknown suspect stepped off the train onto the 35th Street platform, then opened fire, hitting the man in the buttocks. The shooting was reported to have happened between about 10:30 p.m. and 11:59 p.m., and the victim did not immediately report the attack to officers. Detectives are still investigating, and, per police, no one was in custody as of late Monday, as reported by WGN.
History of violence on the Sox‑35th stretch
This stretch of the Red Line has seen multiple violent incidents in recent years, fueling concern among regular riders and nearby residents. A 2025 Hoodline report documented another Red Line shooting near 35th that wounded a 13-year-old and an adult, underscoring recurring safety worries along the corridor when a teen and adult were wounded near 35th.
Police are asking for tips
Chicago police are asking anyone with information or video related to Monday’s shooting to contact detectives. Tips can be submitted anonymously at cpdtip.com. Investigators are reviewing surveillance and cellphone footage and believe the gunfire followed the verbal confrontation on the train, according to WGN.
The shooting is another reminder of the safety challenges some CTA riders face on the South Side, and police say the investigation remains active. Authorities plan to release more details if a suspect is identified or charges are filed.
