A Herriman family is rattled after a masked man tried to kick his way into their home late Friday, hammering the front door until it nearly gave way. Security footage from a house near the South Mountain View Corridor and West Rosecrest Road shows the suspect landing repeated kicks, then turning and running down the street. No one was inside at the time, but the family says the close call has left them shaken.
Homeowner Penny Wardle told KUTV that the video captures several hard blows to the door and that she is still unnerved by what she saw. "I am still shaking from it. We didn't get much sleep last night," Wardle said. The family has filed a police report and turned the footage over to investigators.
Police Seek Tips and More Video
Herriman authorities say the investigation is ongoing and are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect or providing additional camera angles from the area. According to the Herriman City Police Department, non-emergency dispatch can be reached at 801-840-4000, and 911 should be called for crimes in progress. Investigators note that even brief clips or partially obscured license-plate images can give detectives something to work with.
Family Braces for Repairs After Near Breach
Wardle said the intruder's kicks came close to breaking through the door and that the family now plans to swap it out for a heavy-duty version. The household has already spent about $500 on cameras and expects the door and related repairs to run a couple thousand dollars, the family told KUTV. She added that a similar incident four or five months ago involved teenagers, but that this episode felt more threatening because the suspect was an adult. Her husband and brother only caught a glimpse as the man ran away.
How Neighbors Can Harden Their Homes
Security specialists recommend reinforcing doors and frames with a solid-core or steel door, using extended strike-plate screws and a quality deadbolt, and adding visible cameras and motion-activated lighting to discourage attempts, according to Chubb. These kinds of upgrades can both slow down an intruder and increase the odds that neighbors will spot and report suspicious activity. Sharing camera clips with police and taking part in neighborhood watch efforts can also help make video evidence more effective.
Anyone with information or additional footage related to the incident is asked to contact the Herriman City Police. Reporting options and contact details are listed on the department's website, according to the Herriman City Police Department. Police say community tips remain one of the most reliable ways to identify suspects in cases caught on doorbell cameras.
