What happens at a death investigation
The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner is responsible for determining the cause and manner of death in suspicious or violent cases and may be involved when homicide detectives investigate an apparent non-natural death. As outlined by the department, forensic examiners and law enforcement secure evidence, document the scene and, when warranted, perform postmortem examinations to establish how and why a person died.
The block has seen deadly violence before
West 87th Street has seen deadly violence before. Coverage last year detailed two fatal shootings on the same block in February 2025 that prompted a homicide probe. During that earlier investigation, officials also asked the public for tips, according to CBS Los Angeles.
How to report tips
Anyone with information about the scene is asked to contact the LASD Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500, per the department's Homicide Bureau pages. If you prefer to remain anonymous, submit a tip to Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or via lacrimestoppers.org.
