On Monday, in Newark, it turned deadly when a 34-year-old woman and her dog were struck and killed on Cedar Boulevard, according to city police. The collision happened around 8:10 PM near the intersection with Joaquin Murieta Avenue, where emergency crews arrived to find the woman unconscious in the roadway.
Police said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers as they began their investigation. The woman has been identified publicly only by her age and city of residence, and officials confirmed that her dog died in the impact as well. Her name is being withheld until the family can be notified.
Authorities said it is too early to know whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. As reported by The Mercury News, detectives were on scene, collecting evidence.
Newark's Traffic Unit is leading the case and has asked anyone who saw the collision or has relevant information to come forward. The city lists Traffic Sgt. Karl Fredstrom's contact information and an anonymous tip line for potential witnesses. Those contacts are available through the Newark Police Traffic Unit page on the city website.
Investigation Underway
Detectives are now working to reconstruct what happened on Cedar Boulevard, interviewing witnesses and reviewing physical evidence from the scene. Police reiterated that the driver remained on site and cooperated with officers while the investigation got underway.
Investigators told reporters that the cause of the crash is still under review. Lab results, scene evidence, and witness statements will help determine whether impairment or any potential charges come into play, according to information reported by The Mercury News.
Pedestrian Safety And Local Context
The deadly collision lands amid a broader national concern over pedestrian safety. Recent analyses show many pedestrian fatalities occur at night and often involve larger vehicles such as SUVs. The Governors Highway Safety Association has highlighted those trends in its preliminary 2024 data and outlined why communities increasingly focus on lighting, crossing visibility, and other street improvements.
Cedar Boulevard itself has seen serious crashes in recent months. Earlier this winter, a separate incident on the same roadway turned deadly in a motorcycle collision with a traffic island, a February case detailed in a traffic island smash-up in Newark, per Hoodline.
Newark police again urged anyone who witnessed the crash to contact detectives. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the department's hotline or by emailing the traffic unit. Officials said additional details will be released as the investigation moves forward.
