A 41-year-old Oakland Park man is behind bars after his girlfriend was shot in January outside the couple’s small efficiency unit and later died at Broward Health Medical Center, authorities said.
Arrest and investigation
Detectives have identified the suspect as Miguel Hernandez, 41. He was arrested Sunday and is facing one count of manslaughter with a firearm, along with multiple drug-possession charges, according to investigators.
On Jan. 24, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded to the 4000 block of Northeast Eighth Avenue, where they found the woman lying near the doorway of a small efficiency unit. Hernandez was nearby, reportedly "crying and with blood on his hands" as he called out for help, investigators said.
Inside the unit, detectives impounded a handgun and noted the presence of drug paraphernalia. They also obtained consent to search Hernandez’s cellphone, according to Local 10.
Broward context
The case lands at a time when reported domestic violence has been climbing locally. Broward County’s domestic-violence offense rate increased from 102.3 to 132.1 per 100,000 residents between 2020 and 2023, a jump of about 29%, according to the Status of Women in Broward County report.
Statewide figures show Florida’s domestic-violence response system handled tens of thousands of calls and service requests in the 2023-24 period, highlighting how many cases require support beyond a single police response, the Florida Domestic Violence Annual Report notes.
Legal next steps
Hernandez remains in custody while Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives continue their investigation and prosecutors review the file for formal charges. Authorities have not released a possible motive for the shooting, and it is not yet clear whether additional charges will be filed, Local 10 reported.
