A 5-year-old boy from Oakley was airlifted to a trauma center yesterday after what officials are treating as a suspected accidental shooting at a home in the Hemlock Court neighborhood. Photographs and video show paramedics performing life-saving care as a medevac helicopter was called in for the badly wounded child, who suffered a serious abdominal injury.
According to NBC Bay Area, the gunfire broke out in the garage of a house in the 1700 block of Hemlock Court. A photographer on scene reported that the boy had been shot in the stomach and that first responders requested a medevac. Footage from the scene shows the child being loaded into the helicopter while a woman, whose relationship to him was not immediately clear, climbed aboard to accompany him.
Where the medevac landed
Video from the incident shows the helicopter touching down at Crockett Park before lifting off again with the boy aboard. The City of Oakley lists the park's World of Discovery playground at 4150 Richard Way, a short drive from the Hemlock Court area.
Scene and investigation
At the house, yellow evidence markers were placed around the scene as law enforcement documented the area and recovered a rifle, NBC Bay Area reports. Investigators continued canvassing the neighborhood, seeking surveillance video and witness statements as part of the ongoing probe. As of the latest update, officials had not announced any arrests or filed any charges.
Context and safety
Unintentional shootings involving children remain a significant public health concern, and safety advocates frequently highlight secure firearm storage as a key way to prevent tragedies like this one. Analysis from Giffords notes that overall unintentional gun deaths declined in 2024, yet children still accounted for roughly one-third of those deaths. The same analysis found that unintentional child gun deaths rose slightly, from 133 in 2023 to 142 in 2024. Local agencies regularly remind residents that locking firearms and storing ammunition separately can reduce the risk of accidental injuries.
Neighbors and family members were not immediately available for comment. The Sheriff's Office and Oakley police also did not immediately release additional information. This story will be updated if authorities provide further details.
