An 11-year-old child was killed and multiple people were hurt, on Friday night after a stolen car being chased by police crashed into another vehicle in Ogden. The collision happened in a residential area near 31st Street and Grant Avenue after officers tried to stop the vehicle, according to a police statement. Two 14-year-old boys who were in the fleeing car were injured and taken to a hospital.
Traffic Stop Turns Deadly
Shortly before 7:45 p.m., officers located a stolen vehicle in the 2800 block of Quincey Avenue and attempted a traffic stop. Police say the driver did not yield, instead striking an Ogden police vehicle and continuing at high speed. The suspect car later collided with another vehicle at 31st Street and Grant Avenue, prompting a multi-agency response and large-scale rescue effort. That sequence of events comes from an Ogden Police Department press release reported by Gephardt Daily.
Who Was Hurt
According to police, the second vehicle was occupied by two adults and six children. An 11-year-old passenger was ejected and sustained fatal injuries at the scene. The remaining seven occupants were taken to hospitals with injuries described as ranging from critical to non-life-threatening. The two juveniles in the suspect vehicle, identified by police as 14-year-old males, were also injured and transported for medical treatment.
Investigation Underway
The Weber Metro Crash Reconstruction and Scene Handling (CRASH) Team and the Ogden Police Investigations Bureau are leading the probe, with assistance from the Weber-Morgan Homicide Task Force. The CRASH team is a regional unit that handles serious-injury and fatal traffic investigations, according to Harrisville Police, and the task force coordinates homicide inquiries across Weber and Morgan counties per the Weber County Attorney's Office. Police say charges will be filed once the juvenile suspects are medically cleared, as reported by Gephardt Daily.
What Officials Said and Next Steps
Officials said they will withhold identifying information because juveniles are involved and out of respect for the victim’s family. They also stated that no additional details will be released while the investigation continues. Investigators have not provided a timetable for charges or court filings as the multi-agency inquiry moves forward.
