South-southwest winds of 14–18 mph, gusting as high as 28 mph, will make the afternoon feel hotter and could throw a wrench into outdoor plans. Low humidity in western and central Oklahoma is also raising elevated to near-critical fire-weather concerns northwest of I-44.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
The wind machine really cranks up from late morning through late afternoon, when stronger south-southwest flow mixes down and delivers the biggest gusts. According to NWS Norman, the combo of warm temperatures, low relative humidity and gusty winds has pushed fire-weather risk to elevated or near-critical levels in parts of western and central Oklahoma, although forecasters are holding off on issuing a widespread Red Flag Warning for most of central Oklahoma today. It is a good day to secure loose outdoor items and skip any outdoor burning while the gusts are strongest.
Severe Storms Return Tuesday
Storm chances ramp back up on Tuesday, with a chance of afternoon showers after 1 p.m. and growing thunderstorm potential into the evening. Some storms could turn strong to severe with damaging wind and hail. The state has already been dealing with severe storms earlier in the week, and the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management is still coordinating damage assessments and support across affected counties. A front will push through overnight into Wednesday, bringing in a cooler, drier airmass and strong northerly winds on Wednesday with sustained speeds of 25–35 mph and gusts up to 45 mph possible.
