If you've swung by Patagonia's North Beach outpost lately and found it boarded up behind colorful renovation graphics, you haven't stumbled onto a closure — you've caught one of the Wharf area's most beloved outdoor retailers mid-makeover. The Patagonia store at 770 North Point St. is temporarily shuttered for a renovation, with the brand directing customers just three minutes down the block to a pop-up shop inside Ghirardelli Square at 900 North Point St. while the work is underway.
A San Francisco Department of Public Works notice posted in the window — spotted by Hoodline journalist John Rohen — reveals that a street space reservation for building operations at 770 North Point was issued with a permit valid from March 9 through May 8, 2026, with Eco Smart SF listed as the contractor. Whether that window captures the full scope of the renovation timeline isn't clear; the window graphics posted by Patagonia themselves offer no reopening date, only a cheerful cormorant illustration and instructions to follow @patagoniasf for updates.
A Building Worth Knowing About
The 770 North Point store isn't just any Patagonia — it's one of the more architecturally interesting retail spaces in the neighborhood. According to Patagonia's own store page, the building dates to 1924 and was originally built as a mechanic's shop — a past visible in its high ceilings, industrial bones, and the year "1924" still proudly displayed in molded relief above the entrance. It sits in the North Beach neighborhood, with quick access to Fisherman's Wharf, Fort Mason, and the Presidio — a location that draws both tourists and locals with some regularity.
The store operates under the legal entity name "Great Pacific Iron Works," which is the original name of Patagonia's very first retail store, founded in Ventura in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard — a nod to the brand's climbing-shop origins that the company has preserved across several locations. Patagonia was built out of Chouinard's hand-forged climbing gear business and has grown into one of the country's most prominent outdoor apparel retailers, long known for its environmental activism and unconventional corporate ethos.
Meanwhile: Pop-Up at Ghirardelli
Rather than leave North Beach shoppers stranded, Patagonia has set up a temporary retail presence at Ghirardelli Square, just a three-minute walk up North Point Street at 900 North Point. The renovation graphics on the door include a hand-drawn map of the route and encourage customers to call (415) 771-2050 or follow @patagoniasf for news on when the main store will reopen. Yelp currently lists the 770 North Point location as "Temporarily Closed."
Ghirardelli Square itself is a landmark in its own right — the former home of the Ghirardelli chocolate factory, converted to a retail and dining complex in the 1960s. Landing a Patagonia pop-up there, even a temporary one, puts the outdoor brand squarely alongside some of the most foot-trafficked real estate in the city. Whether it'll convert any tourists into Nano Puff loyalists is anyone's guess, but the pop-up does keep the brand's local presence alive through what's looking like at least a spring construction run.
No reopening date has been announced. Hoodline SF reached out to Patagonia for comment but had not received a response at time of publication.
