A late-morning walk turned deadly in East County last Saturday when a driver in a pickup truck struck and killed a pedestrian at the intersection of Prospect and Woodside avenues in the Winter Gardens area, authorities said.
San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find the pedestrian dead at the scene, and nearby streets were quickly shut down while emergency crews and investigators moved in. The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation and has identified the vehicle involved as a Dodge Ram. The victim’s name has not been released, and the roadway remained closed for about two hours while officials documented the scene and cleared the area, according to FOX 5 San Diego.
Crash scene sits on busy stretch between Lakeside and Winter Gardens
The collision happened in an unincorporated pocket between Lakeside and Winter Gardens, a corridor that has seen its share of serious wrecks in recent months. Coverage of other crashes near Woodside Avenue has shown how fast a single impact can snarl traffic and turn a commercial block into a chaotic crash site for first responders, as reported by 10News (KGTV).
CHP probing speed, impairment and roadway conditions
CHP traffic investigators typically look at a familiar checklist after a fatal crash, including the driver’s speed, any signs of impairment, the condition of the roadway and whether the pedestrian was within a marked crossing. Officials said more details will be released once the investigation is further along and the victim’s family has been notified, according to FOX 5 San Diego.
