An early-morning drive on southbound Interstate 880 in San Leandro turned deadly yesterday, when a single-car crash near the Davis Street exit left two men dead and a woman injured, authorities said.
The collision was reported around 5:30 AM. The car became trapped between a freeway guardrail and an exit signpost, and both men were pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials. The woman in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where she is expected to survive.
The car, a black Nissan Maxima carrying two men and a woman, struck the large post that supports the Davis Street exit sign and then wedged between the post and the guardrail, the California Highway Patrol told KRON4. Officers said none of the occupants appeared to be wearing seatbelts, and CHP investigators said alcohol and/or drugs most likely played a role as they continued their work at the scene.
State Data Underscore Risks Of Impairment And No Seatbelts
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, alcohol-impaired driving has accounted for roughly one-third of traffic deaths in recent years, with unbelted occupants still overrepresented among people killed on California roads. Those long-running trends are a big reason investigators routinely scrutinize both impairment and seatbelt use in fatal crashes, officials say.
Ongoing Investigation And Potential Charges
The CHP said the investigation into the wreck is ongoing and has not announced any arrests, according to KRON4. If toxicology results and the broader probe indicate impairment contributed to the crash, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office would review the case for possible DUI-related charges.
