Shorewood police say a 19-year-old man attacked his mother, then came at officers with a knife during a tense domestic call that spilled onto a front lawn on March 5.
The suspect, identified by police as Ryan Dube, was arrested after officers say they tackled and restrained him outside a home in the 200 block of South Ravinia Drive. According to Shorewood Police Chief Phil Arnold, the victim and one officer were evaluated by paramedics at the scene.
Responding to a 911 call, officers say they arrived to find Dube striking and pushing his mother inside the house. Police say she bolted out the front door, with Dube chasing her while holding a knife.
One officer tackled Dube as he advanced on the woman, and a second officer moved in after Dube allegedly raised the knife toward an officer, according to Patch.
Officer Tackles Knife-Wielding Teen on Front Lawn
Shorewood police say the officer brought Dube down to stop the attack, and while on the ground Dube allegedly swung the knife at the officer. Both the officer and Dube's mother were checked out by paramedics for injuries.
Officers quickly gained control of Dube and transported him to the Will County Adult Detention Facility pending a pretrial hearing, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Felony Counts and SAFE-T Act Hearing Ahead
After consulting with the Will County State's Attorney's Office, Shorewood police say Dube has been charged with felony aggravated assault and two counts of domestic battery.
He was booked into the Will County Adult Detention Facility and is awaiting a pretrial release hearing under Illinois' SAFE-T Act procedures, according to Patch.
What This Means Legally
The aggravated assault charge is a felony that can carry prison time if prosecutors pursue it and a conviction follows, though Dube is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Court filings, bond decisions and any additional charges will be handled by the Will County State's Attorney. Media requests for further details were referred to prosecutors, as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
