A nighttime drive through Archer Heights turned violent Thursday when gunfire tore into a moving car on the Southwest Side, leaving two 19-year-olds in serious condition, according to police.
The attack unfolded around 9:21 p.m. in the 4800 block of South Kostner Avenue, authorities said. The two victims, a 19-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital. The man was shot in the back, and the woman was hit in her left ankle. Detectives began canvassing the area, but no arrests were reported.
What the police say
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the two 19-year-olds were inside a moving vehicle when shots were fired at them. The report, citing Chicago police, was filed by Sun-Times Wire and lays out the initial details of the attack.
Archer Heights' recent violence
Archer Heights has been here before. The neighborhood has seen repeated shootings in recent years, including a 2023 attack that left a teenager dead and others wounded, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago. Neighbors say the recurring violence has worn down families and local businesses that are trying to keep things stable on the block.
Investigation underway
No one was in custody after Thursday night’s shooting, and Area One detectives were investigating, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. As in many nonfatal shootings, police are expected to rely heavily on witnesses and any available video as they work to piece together who opened fire and why.
Past arrests sometimes come months later
For Archer Heights residents, there is a frustrating pattern. Some cases have taken months to produce arrests. A December 2025 arrest tied to an August street shooting showed how long detectives can spend following leads before filing charges. That kind of delay can leave victims’ families waiting for closure.
Tips and next steps
Anyone with information or video related to Thursday’s shooting is urged to contact Chicago police or Area One detectives. Residents who want to remain anonymous can submit tips to Crime Stoppers or use the Chicago Police Department’s non-emergency line.
