Burekas Box has quietly put San Diego's first battery-operated commercial food truck on the road, swapping noisy diesel generators for a zero-emissions kitchen on wheels while serving Israeli burekas by the box. The owners already run a commercial kitchen and have been handling pickup orders and catering jobs since last summer. Pickups are available Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 3 PM, at 8585 Commerce Avenue in Miramar.
Co-owners Nirit Wigdor and Shalva Mikhelashvili launched the concept after Wigdor realized there were few authentic burekas options in the city, and Mikhelashvili secured a grant to build an electric truck, as reported by San Diego Magazine. The duo started as a pop-up at Ox Coffee in June 2025 and, after selling out in two hours, opened a commercial kitchen to handle catering and pickup orders.
All Electric Truck, Traditional Pastries
Burekas Box bills itself as "San Diego's first Zero Emissions Food Truck" and centers its menu on savory burekas, flaky, buttery pastries filled with cheese, potato, or mushrooms and served with pickles, olives, hard-boiled egg and dipping sauces, per Burekas Box. Standouts include a secret four-cheese Classic Cheese, a spinach-and-cheese bureka topped with za'atar, a caramelized-onion and mushroom favorite, and sweet options like the Choco-holic.
How They Are Operating
The owners launched the electric truck in January 2026 to bring their pastries to festivals, private events and rotating street locations around the county, after proving demand with pop-ups, according to San Diego Magazine. The business says it plans to expand into wholesale and add more trucks if the zero-emissions model proves financially sustainable.
