A 29-year-old man was left fighting for his life Wednesday night after a woman he knew stabbed him twice in the back during a fight in the Princeton Park neighborhood on Chicago’s Far South Side, police said. The confrontation unfolded just before 9 p.m. on the 9000 block of South Harvard Avenue.
The man was rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition. The woman suffered a cut to her left hand and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where she was reported in good condition.
Police said the incident appeared to be domestic-related and, at least for now, have not announced any charges.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, Chicago police told reporters the two were arguing before the woman produced a knife and stabbed the man twice in the back. The station reports the information came from the Chicago Police Department, which has not publicly identified either person or specified their relationship.
Where It Happened
The 9000 block of South Harvard sits in Princeton Park near the Roseland neighborhood on the city’s Far South Side. That stretch of Harvard has seen violence before, with the Chicago Sun-Times recording a stabbing on a nearby block in 2018, a reminder that parts of the Far South Side periodically wrestle with serious assaults.
Possible Charges And The Law
No charges have been announced as detectives continue to gather evidence. Under Illinois law, a stabbing that results in serious injury can be prosecuted as aggravated battery, as outlined by the Illinois General Assembly. Depending on proof of intent, prosecutors sometimes pursue attempted murder under the state attempt statute, also detailed by the Illinois General Assembly.
Investigation Under Way
Area detectives are expected to canvass the block, look for witnesses, and review any available surveillance footage as they build their case, police said. The details released so far came to reporters through the Chicago Police Department and were summarized by FOX 32 Chicago, but investigators have not shared many specifics about the relationship between the two or whether anyone is currently in custody.
Officials have not provided further updates. The investigation remains active, and Cook County prosecutors are expected to review the police file before deciding whether to approve any charges.
