Chicago police are asking riders to help identify a person tied to a robbery and an attempted robbery aboard a CTA Red Line train on Feb. 21. Both incidents happened on the South Side within minutes of each other, with the first near the Cermak–Chinatown stop at about 7 a.m. and the second about seven minutes later at the 47th Street station. Officers say one rider had property taken by force and another was the target of an attempted theft. Detectives say the investigation is still very much active.
Where it happened
The Chicago Police Department placed the incidents in the Armour Square, Dearborn Homes, Wentworth Gardens, Park Boulevard and Fuller Park neighborhoods. Police say the first incident occurred around 7 a.m. near the Cermak–Chinatown Red Line stop and the second happened roughly seven minutes later at the 47th Street station. The community alert includes case reference numbers JK157234 and JK157315, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
How to help investigators
Anyone with information is asked to contact Major Crimes Mass Transit detectives at (312) 745-4447 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com, according to CBS Chicago. Detectives note that even brief witness video or a clear description can be crucial for moving an investigation forward.
Context and safety pressure
The appeal comes amid a wave of violent incidents on CTA trains this winter that local reporting has documented, increasing concern among regular riders. Local coverage of recent Red Line beatings and stabbings, including reporting that led to arrests in other cases, shows how surveillance footage and tips have helped investigators. Federal transit officials have also pressed the CTA to deliver a stronger safety plan or risk losing a portion of federal operating funds, as FOX 32 Chicago reported.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the Feb. 21 incidents to call detectives or to upload footage through the CPD tip portal. If you see suspicious behavior on a train, officials say to alert a CTA employee or call 911. The CTA outlines rider reporting options and tips for traveling smart.
