Springfield police say two local parents are behind bars after a March 4 Special Victims Unit investigation into alleged sexual abuse and neglect involving their three young children. The arrests targeted 25-year-old William Muniz and 28-year-old Editza Miro-Navarro, who authorities allege were involved in the rape of a 2-year-old and the reckless endangerment of two boys. Detectives identified the victims as a girl and two boys between the ages of 2 and 8. Both suspects are in custody and face multiple criminal charges while the investigation continues.
In a post by the Springfield Police Department, officers said both suspects were taken into custody on Wednesday. Reporting by WWLP says detectives began investigating Muniz on Feb. 5 after initial allegations emerged and that the case later developed information suggesting the abuse was sexual in nature.
Arrests and charges
Police say Muniz faces charges including rape of a child (ten year age difference), obscene matter to a minor, two counts of reckless endangerment of a child, witness intimidation and withholding evidence from a criminal proceeding. Miro-Navarro is charged with reckless endangerment of a child, witness intimidation and withholding evidence from a criminal proceeding, per WWLP.
What detectives allege
Western Mass News reports that the alleged abuse involved the couple’s three children, a girl and two boys between the ages of 2 and 8, and that detectives determined Miro-Navarro was aware of the abuse for about a month and did not report it. Investigators additionally allege Miro-Navarro destroyed evidence on a cell phone related to the probe. SVU detectives applied for and were granted arrest warrants before officers from the warrant apprehension unit and partner agencies executed them, according to Western Mass News.
Legal next steps
Both suspects are in custody and will be processed in the coming days; the charges are allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The Hampden County District Attorney’s Office, which operates a Special Victims Unit that prosecutes child sex cases, will determine prosecution and has in past cases secured multi year sentences for rape of a child convictions, per Hampden County District Attorney. Authorities have not released additional details about the children’s condition, per the Springfield Police Department.
