A 19-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday evening when gunfire ripped into a home in Auburn Gresham, turning a quiet stretch of Chicago’s South Side into a crime scene as police rushed in and taped off the block.
The shooting unfolded around 5:08 p.m. in the 7700 block of South Racine Avenue. Police said someone in a passing vehicle opened fire on the residence, hitting the 19-year-old in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and Area Two detectives are investigating, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Where This Happened and What It Means
Auburn Gresham sits within the Chicago Police Department’s Gresham District, a South Side area that has wrestled with stubbornly high rates of gun violence even as shootings have trended down across much of the city. Citywide killings fell to a decades-low last year, yet districts like Gresham still recorded some of Chicago’s highest homicide totals, a contrast that local groups say highlights the ongoing need for serious investment in prevention and intervention efforts, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Neighbors and Next Steps
Residents and community leaders have been pressing for stronger violence-intervention programs after a recent run of shootings in and around the neighborhood. Earlier this year, a nearby pre-dawn incident left a teenager wounded in the hand, an episode detailed in Hoodline’s coverage of pre-dawn Ashland gunfire.
Anyone with information about Saturday’s killing is urged to contact the Chicago police. Area detectives are continuing to canvass for witnesses and evidence as the investigation moves forward, per ABC7 Chicago.
