A late-night scare in the north-suburban village of Green Oaks ended with a Vernon Hills man in cuffs after authorities say he tried to force his way into a home, shattered a front bay window, and may have briefly gotten inside early Thursday morning. Deputies say he also used his vehicle to block a resident’s car in the attached garage as neighbors watched him run through nearby yards and, at one point, allegedly try to ram the house with his vehicle.

Deputies' account of the incident

Lake County deputies were called about 1:30 a.m. to the 1900 block of Kenton Lane, where they later identified the suspect as 36-year-old Grant Manning of Vernon Hills, according to a statement from the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Officials say Manning blocked a resident’s vehicle in the garage and smashed the home's bay window during the chaotic encounter. Authorities have not said what led up to the confrontation or whether Manning knew the people inside.

When deputies arrived, they found Manning covered in blood and acting aggressively, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office. He allegedly refused deputies’ commands and was taken into custody only after they deployed a Taser. Manning was given initial medical aid at the scene for cuts believed to be from broken glass, then taken to a hospital for treatment and later released. No other injuries were reported.

Charges and custody

The Lake County State's Attorney's Office has charged Manning with unlawful restraint, criminal damage to property, aggravated assault to a peace officer, and resisting a peace officer, and he is being held at the Lake County Jail awaiting his first court appearance, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Prosecutors are expected to present the case at the initial hearing, and investigators say the case remains active.

So far, officials have released only limited details beyond the initial statement, and the sheriff's office has provided the primary account of what happened as the investigation continues.
