A Saturday evening commute in West Town turned violent when a man was stabbed during an argument on a CTA bus, according to Chicago police. The attack happened around 6:40 p.m., leaving the passenger with wounds to his arm and side. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, and detectives have opened an investigation into the incident.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, the confrontation began on a bus in the 600 block of North Ashland Avenue when two men got into a verbal dispute, and one pulled out a sharp object. The man who was stabbed was transported to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was initially reported as unknown. No one was in custody as of the preliminary police report, and Area detectives are handling the probe.
Police Investigating, No Identified Suspect
Area detectives are leading the investigation and have not publicly identified a suspect or discussed a possible motive. Investigators said they are reviewing available video and speaking with any witnesses who were on or near the bus at the time of the stabbing.
Transit Safety Under Federal Scrutiny
The stabbing comes as the CTA faces heightened scrutiny over rider safety from both federal and local authorities. The Federal Transit Administration rejected the agency’s December safety plan and ordered a stronger strategy within 90 days, or it could withhold about $50 million in federal funds, citing concerns about assaults on CTA property, according to NBC Chicago. In response, the CTA has rolled out an expanded security surge that includes more off-duty Chicago police officers and private K-9 teams in an effort to deter violence and reassure riders.
What Riders Should Know
The CTA says it operates an extensive camera network, works closely with the Chicago Police Department, and offers several ways for riders to report problems, including calling 911 in emergencies or contacting CTA customer service, per the agency’s security page. The investigation into Saturday’s stabbing remains active, and detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Chicago police.
