
A quiet midweek afternoon at a southwest Atlanta strip mall turned violent on Wednesday when a 22-year-old man was shot at Gordon Plaza, near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW and Peyton Road SW. The man was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
APD Probes Daylight Attack, Checks Security Footage
Officers were called to the plaza just after 3 p.m., and investigators with the Atlanta Police Department’s Aggravated Assault Unit took control of the scene. Police collected evidence, spoke with witnesses, and pulled surveillance-camera footage as they dug into what happened. No arrests had been announced as of Wednesday, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Busy Corner Becomes a Crime Scene
According to MapQuest, Gordon Plaza is located at 2460 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. SW. The one-story shopping center sits at the signalized intersection of MLK Jr. Drive and Peyton Road and houses a cluster of small retailers and neighborhood services that see steady traffic throughout the day.
Unknown Motive, No Suspect Description Released
Investigators have not said what led up to the shooting or whether the gunfire erupted inside one of the businesses or out in the parking lot. Police have also not released a description of any suspect or possible getaway vehicle, and the victim’s name has not been made public, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Ongoing Investigation Along a Troubled Corridor
Detectives are expected to continue reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses as the investigation moves forward. The MLK Jr. Drive corridor in southwest Atlanta has seen shootings before, including a fatal incident in March 2023, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
