A Sunday afternoon confrontation in Altgeld Gardens turned violent when a 27-year-old woman was shot in the stomach during a physical fight on Chicago’s Far South Side, according to police. She was taken to Christ Hospital, where she was reported to be in good condition. Detectives from the Chicago Police Department’s Area Two have opened an investigation.
Around 4:44 p.m., the altercation broke out in the 13300 block of South Corliss Avenue when an unidentified woman allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot the victim, according to FOX 32 Chicago, which cited information from the Chicago Police Department.
Investigation
FOX 32 Chicago reports that Area Two detectives are actively working the case. Police have not released the suspect’s name, a possible motive, or any description, and no arrests had been announced as of Sunday evening.
Neighborhood context
The shooting adds to a grim stretch of violence on parts of the Far South Side. Earlier this year, sanitation workers discovered a woman shot to death in a nearby area of the South Side.
Altgeld Gardens, a sprawling public housing complex, has a long history of local organizing and environmental justice activism, according to WBEZ. Community advocates have repeatedly called for more resources to tackle violence and decades of disinvestment in and around the neighborhood.
What police say
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Area Two detectives, and to call 911 in an emergency. Authorities say the investigation remains open and they plan to release additional details as they become available.
