Baltimore started Tuesday, April 7, 2026, looking deceptively friendly: bright sun, cool air in the low 50s, and mostly clear skies. By later today, that postcard morning gives way to a bite in the air as northwest winds pick up and temperatures slide toward a much colder night.
Freeze Warning Overnight
The National Weather Service has upgraded several areas to a Freeze Warning from 12:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2026, with forecasters warning that temperatures may dip below 32°F and could harm sensitive plants and unprotected outdoor plumbing. Inland spots west of I-95 may drop into the upper 20s while Baltimore itself is expected to bottom out in the low 30s, according to the forecast office. National Weather Service
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Through the afternoon, northwest winds around 7 to 17 mph are expected, with gusts up to about 29 mph that will make it feel several degrees colder than the forecast high near 53°F. The strongest gusts should line up along the waterfront and on exposed bridges, so it is a good time to secure loose patio furniture and give cyclists and drivers on open spans a little extra space and time.
Small Craft Advisory On The Bay
A Small Craft Advisory is posted for local tidal waters through this evening, so recreational boaters are urged to skip nonessential trips on the Chesapeake until winds back off. Even if the harbor looks tame from shore, choppy water and sudden gusts can make small boats feel a lot less stable than they seem at the dock.
What To Do Tonight
Before heading to bed, cover or bring in tender plants, disconnect garden hoses, and wrap any exposed outdoor pipes. A brief freeze is enough to wipe out early seedlings and crack uninsulated plumbing. For more context on the same cool, blustery pattern, check out our earlier look at how chilly gusts whip the waterfront.
Dry weather holds through the week with a warming trend arriving late Thursday and into Friday, when highs push toward the 70s. In the meantime, anyone with early outdoor plans on Wednesday should be ready for a crisp, winter-style start. If you are on the fence about whether your plants or pipes are at risk where you live, play it safe and protect anything vulnerable before midnight.
