An 83-year-old driver was killed Wednesday afternoon after a car crossed the yellow center line on Beacon Street in Newton and slammed into another vehicle head-on. The collision shut down a stretch of the roadway across from Newton Cemetery for several hours before crews cleared the scene and reopened the lanes.
What happened
According to Boston 25 News, the crash occurred around 3:42 p.m. The driver who crossed the yellow lines was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, while people in the other car suffered injuries that were reported as not life threatening.
Scene and response
Sky5 aerial footage showed both vehicles with heavy front-end damage near the sidewalk as emergency crews worked the scene and police shut down traffic in both directions. Local TV coverage from WCVB and WHDH captured long backups and a major first-responder presence along the busy corridor.
Investigation underway
The Middlesex District Attorney's Office, the Newton Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating the collision, according to Boston 25 News. Authorities have not released the driver's name and are reviewing the scene and vehicle evidence to determine what led up to the crash.
Traffic safety context
Beacon Street is a heavily used route that regional planners have repeatedly flagged for safety improvements. The Boston Region MPO's Vision Zero Action Plan lists sections of Beacon Street among Newton's top city-controlled corridors for serious crashes and points to lane-departure collisions and older-driver involvement as recurring factors. The Boston Region MPO Vision Zero Action Plan suggests a mix of roadway design changes and targeted enforcement could help lower those risks.
No criminal charges have been announced, and the investigation remains active. Officials say more details will be released when they are available. This is a developing story.
