A central Phoenix neighborhood turned into an active emergency scene Friday when crews pulled the body of an adult from the Grand Canal near Third Avenue and Hazelwood Street. Firefighters pronounced the person dead at the scene, and Phoenix police have opened an investigation into what happened in the waterway.
Fire crews responding to reports from the area found the adult "beyond resuscitation," officials told KTAR News. The report noted that the Phoenix Police Department is handling the case and that authorities have not released the victim's age or gender.
Response And Investigation
Phoenix Fire Department crews were first on scene and recovered the body from the canal. The city’s Phoenix Fire Department page explains that the agency regularly handles emergency medical calls and technical rescue operations, including incidents in local waterways.
Once the body was recovered, Phoenix police detectives took control of the area and began the investigative phase. According to the department’s own public information, detectives are responsible for processing evidence and conducting follow-up interviews in cases like this, as they work to determine how and why the person ended up in the canal.
Canal Recoveries And Local Context
The incident is part of a pattern of occasional recoveries in Phoenix’s canal system. The Grand Canal and other Valley waterways have periodically been the focus of rescue and recovery operations as crews try to balance trail access with public safety concerns along the popular paths.
AZFamily previously reported on another body recovered from a central Phoenix canal in March 2025, a reminder that these urban waterways can quickly turn from scenic backdrops into active emergency scenes.
