A two-vehicle crash near Boiling Springs flipped a mule-drawn wagon and sent several people to a hospital for evaluation, according to rescuers, turning a quiet rural stretch west of Charlotte into an unexpected traffic scene.
The collision between a car and a mule-drawn wagon happened Sunday on the 3400 block of Cliffside Road, closing the roadway while crews worked the site. Photos from first responders showed a car with heavy front-end damage and the wagon on its side.
Units from Station 23 responded to the 3400 block of Cliffside Road near the three-way intersection of Cliffside and Mt. Pleasant Church roads and found a two-vehicle collision with the wagon overturned, The Charlotte Observer reports. Those hurt were taken to a local hospital for evaluation, according to the report.
"The mules were found to have little to no injuries," Boiling Springs Fire & Rescue wrote on Facebook, as cited by The Charlotte Observer. The social media post and photos from the scene did not explain how the crash happened.
Where it happened
The crash took place in Cleveland County on the 3400 block of Cliffside Road, close to the three-way junction with Mt. Pleasant Church Road. By road, Boiling Springs sits roughly 54 miles west of uptown Charlotte, or about a one-hour drive, according to Travelmath.
Response and next steps
Officials have not released a cause for the crash or identified those involved, and investigators appear to still be gathering information. The early details came from Boiling Springs Fire & Rescue's Facebook post and images shared by first responders. Any formal findings are expected later from the investigating agencies.
Collisions between motor vehicles and animal-drawn wagons are rare but can turn serious on narrow country roads, especially where visibility is limited. Drivers in the area are being reminded to share the road with slower traffic and to take it easy on rural routes that can hide surprises around the bend, whether those surprises arrive on four wheels or four hooves.
