Registered nurses and other health professionals represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association filed the formal, legally required 10-day notice for a three-day strike beginning April 30, according to PR Newswire. Service workers represented by 1199 SEIU at the two BMC campuses had also voted to authorize a one-day walkout on May 1 in response to disputes over staffing, wages and benefits.
BMC Health System said both unions have now rescinded their strike notices and that system leaders will meet with bargaining committees next week to review a final offer, according to reporting in The Enterprise. In a written statement quoted by the local outlet, BMC said it was optimistic the sides could agree on a “fair, market-competitive” contract.
Why Workers Set a Date
Union leaders say proposed cuts to benefits, steep cost shifts in healthcare coverage and chronic understaffing pushed members toward a strike. The Massachusetts Nurses Association has accused BMC of proposing changes that would shift thousands of dollars a year in insurance costs onto workers and of offering wage increases that lag inflation.
