
A dirt bike rider who Louisiana State Police say was trying to get away from an attempted traffic stop died Monday evening after slamming into another vehicle at Canal Street and City Park Avenue. The collision happened shortly after 5 p.m. The rider was thrown from the bike and rushed to a hospital, where he later died. Troopers said the driver of the other vehicle was not hurt.
State police say rider was trying to evade officers
According to FOX 8, Louisiana State Police said the rider was attempting to evade an attempted traffic stop by troopers and New Orleans Police Department officers when the crash occurred. The station reported that the rider’s identity and age had not yet been released and that investigators remained at the scene Monday evening.
Crackdown on illegal off-road vehicles along Canal
The deadly wreck unfolded as state troopers continue a crackdown on ATVs and dirt bikes along Canal Street and nearby corridors. Troopers recently seized dozens of off-road vehicles and recovered firearms during targeted operations, according to WDSU. Authorities have repeatedly warned that many of the vehicles are not street legal and can put both riders and other drivers at risk.
Investigators seek video and witnesses
Louisiana State Police are asking anyone who may have photos or video of the crash, or other information about what happened, to call the agency’s tip line at (800) 434-8007, FOX 8 reported. Troopers said the investigation is ongoing and that more details will be released once they are confirmed.
