Veggie Galaxy, the retro-style diner in Central Square, Cambridge, just scored some serious national bragging rights. The spot has been named the Best Vegan-Friendly Restaurant in America in VegNews' annual Restaurant Awards, a nod to a menu that can be made almost entirely vegan without losing that classic greasy-spoon comfort vibe.
VegNews Puts a Local Favorite on Top
In its latest Restaurant Awards, VegNews put Veggie Galaxy at the top of the "Best Vegan-Friendly Restaurant" category and handed it the Editors' Vote as well. The magazine noted that "Every menu item at this 14-year-old Boston-area vegetarian diner can be made vegan" and highlighted the on-site vegan bakery as a major draw.
Owners Say the Win Belongs to the Whole Crew
Inside the diner, the mood is understandably celebratory. Managing partner Michael Bissanti called the accolade "incredibly meaningful to our entire team," while co-owner Deatrich Wise Jr. said that being named the best vegan-friendly restaurant "is a huge honor," according to statements shared with Boston 25 News.
From Central Square Hangout to National Spotlight
Veggie Galaxy opened in 2011 and sits on a busy stretch of Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square, where its retro-diner aesthetic pairs with a from-scratch kitchen, according to Cambridge Day. That reporting also notes that former Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. joined the ownership group in 2024. The diner drew national eyes after a 2019 appearance on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," and VegNews points to the in-house vegan bakery as a continuing reason people keep coming back.
For locals and visitors, the latest recognition is another sign that Boston's plant-based dining scene is gaining traction beyond the region. Owners say the honor will help fuel more menu innovation and community outreach, including new partnerships aimed at expanding access to plant-based meals, Boston 25 News reports.
