A 39-year-old Charlotte man was struck and killed by a CSX train Wednesday at a crossing near Sardis Road North and Galleria Boulevard in southeast Charlotte, a busy corridor that has long drawn safety concerns.
The victim, identified by police as Bobby Joe Skidmore, was pronounced dead at the scene by MEDIC crews. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say the investigation is ongoing and have not released additional information about how the collision happened.
What Authorities Are Saying
According to WCNC, detectives remained at the Sardis Road North and Galleria Boulevard crossing for hours as they worked to document the scene and piece together the moments leading up to the impact.
So far, police have not publicly detailed whether Skidmore was on foot or in a vehicle, nor have they said what, if anything, may have contributed to the deadly collision. CSX has not yet released a public statement about the incident.
A Crossing Already On The State’s Radar
The area around the crash site is not a stranger to safety scrutiny. The intersection at Sardis Road North and Galleria Boulevard appears in the N.C. Department of Transportation’s 2022 Highway Safety Improvement Program, which highlights locations across the state flagged for potential safety improvements.
The listing focuses on vehicle and intersection risks, not railroad operations specifically, but it underscores that this stretch of Sardis Road has been on the radar of transportation officials as a trouble spot.
Charlotte And The Bigger Rail-Safety Picture
This is not the first deadly train incident in Charlotte in recent months. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department newsroom has documented another fatal train collision in January 2026, and investigators across the city continue to grapple with rail-related crashes.
Nationally, rail safety officials warn that the problem goes far beyond any single crossing. The Federal Railroad Administration reports that trespassing on railroad property remains the leading cause of rail-related deaths in the United States, with hundreds of trespasser fatalities reported each year.
Investigation Still Active
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say their investigation into Skidmore’s death is still very much active, and they are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about what happened to contact authorities.
Officials are expected to release more details as they review evidence from the scene and speak with potential witnesses. This story will be updated as police or rail officials provide additional information.
