Sunday in Baltimore started off gray and soggy, with steady rain and temperatures parked in the mid-50s. The high is only expected to reach about 57F, and while the rain should ease up by early afternoon, the tradeoff will be a blustery ride into the rest of the day. Plan on wet roads, some pockets of reduced visibility, and gusty crosswinds on exposed bridges as you get around town.
Afternoon Winds And Travel
By around midday, rain should be on the way out, with most spots picking up only a few tenths of an inch overall. Even so, puddles and slick ramps will hang around into the afternoon. Northwest winds of 8 to 15 mph will strengthen, with gusts climbing into the upper 20s and occasionally flirting with 30 mph. Cyclists may want to brace for sudden pushes, and drivers should be ready for those quick, shifting gusts. If you are heading out on the water, expect choppier conditions from late morning through the evening.
Freeze Watch, Advisories And Timing
A Freeze Watch is on the board for late Monday night into Tuesday morning, with lows possibly dipping to around 29 to 32F. That is cold enough to damage tender plants and unprotected outdoor plumbing. The National Weather Service notes that today's rain totals are light, generally around a tenth to a quarter of an inch, and that strong northwest gusts behind the system could dry fuels quickly. That raises a fire-weather concern on Monday and will also help kick up choppy harbor conditions. Small Craft Advisories are in effect in parts of the Chesapeake and tidal Potomac, according to NWS Baltimore/Washington. Now is the time to cover potted plants, disconnect hoses, and secure outdoor faucets where you can.
Fire Weather Risk And Preparedness
Forecasters are also flagging a conditional fire-weather threat for Monday if fuels dry out quickly behind the front, mainly west of the Blue Ridge. The guidance is simple: avoid open burns and consider putting off any planned yard fires. We covered this pattern in our April 17 preview — wind and rain crash the weekend — and will update if local burn rules change. If you run irrigation or other outdoor systems, pause automatic schedules until after the freeze risk has passed.
What To Do
For Baltimore residents, the short list is straightforward: plan for a wet, breezy Sunday; secure loose patio and garden items before the winds really pick up; and cover tender plants ahead of Monday night. Check municipal and transit advisories if you are out early, and boaters should confirm any harbor plans before casting off.
