A cherry-red 1957 Fiat 500, retrofitted into a gelato cart, has pulled into DUMBO and parked at Time Out Market's Empire Stores, where it will start scooping on Friday. L'Artigiano Gelato, a family brand that traces its lineage back to a 1927 cart in Assisi, is serving Italian-made flavors from the vintage car alongside a new stall inside the market.

Francesco Annaloro, who launched the L'Artigiano brand in 2012, told Time Out that the Fiat idea came straight out of his childhood, when a ride in a classic 500 clearly made a lasting impression. “Growing up, the business was always part of our daily life,” he said, stressing the company’s focus on high-quality, natural ingredients sourced from Italy and other premium regions.

The company’s “Riding 500” concept is all about pairing old-school gelato craftsmanship with a seriously photogenic setup, the brand explains on its website. L'Artigiano Gelato notes that the Fiat format has already popped up at malls and shopping centers, and that core ingredients include Sicilian pistachios and fresh Italian dairy.

Flavors and the Fiat

On the menu are scoops like affogato al caffaffogato al caff, stracciatella and tiramis, plus sorbets such as mango and Sicilian lemon, according to Time Out. The custom 1957 Fiat is parked right next to the stall, offering a compact, camera-ready spin on an Italian gelateria in the middle of DUMBO.

Where to find it

L'Artigiano's stall sits inside Time Out Market New York at Empire Stores, with the vintage Fiat stationed just outside to complete the scene. (This content contains unexpected characters)
