A late-night disturbance call at a Cleveland, Tennessee apartment complex ended in gunfire early Friday, leaving an armed man dead after a brief shootout with police.
Officers with the Cleveland Police Department were dispatched to Brookes Edge Apartments just after midnight on a report of an intoxicated man who would not stop following two people around the complex and who was said to have a firearm on his hip. According to WDEF, officers tried to talk with the man when they arrived. Police say he then pulled out a gun and pointed it at the units, and a short exchange of gunfire followed.
The man was struck, taken to a local hospital, and later pronounced dead. No officers were injured, WDEF reports.
Police: Investigation ongoing
The Cleveland Police Department has released few details so far, stressing that the case is still active. “This is an ongoing investigation,” the department said, according to WDEF.
Officials have not released the man’s name and have not identified the officers involved in the shooting. Investigators remained at the scene in the hours after the incident and say the inquiry is continuing.
Where it happened
The shooting took place at Brookes Edge, a hillside apartment complex located off Paul Huff Parkway. Brookes Edge lists its address as 3925 Adkisson Dr., Cleveland, TN 37312, and the property notes its proximity to Cleveland State Community College and Lee University.
What remains unclear
Authorities have not publicly identified the man who died, and it is not yet clear whether any charges will be filed in connection with the incident. Investigators also have not said what, if anything, might have led to the man being armed when officers arrived.
