A 16-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 33-year-old Alan J. Maldonado after what police describe as a months-long investigation into the October 2025 shooting on Chicago's Southwest Side.
Police: Deadly Argument Turned Into Gunfire
Investigators say an argument around 3 a.m. on Oct. 6 in the 2600 block of West 39th Place ended when the teen pulled a gun and shot Maldonado twice in the chest. Officers recovered a firearm at the scene, and Maldonado was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
The suspect was arrested Monday near 42nd and Rockwell streets and is now facing one felony count of first-degree murder, police said.
Victim Identified as Alan J. Maldonado
The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the victim as Alan J. Maldonado, 33, following the October shooting. Area detectives initially handled the investigation at the scene, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Charges and Processing
Because the suspect is 16, police have not released his name. He is charged with a single felony count of first-degree murder. Officials did not immediately provide a court date or additional case details, per FOX 32 Chicago.
Legal Note
Illinois law generally keeps juvenile court records and the identities of minors out of public view under the Juvenile Court Act (705 ILCS 405). Judges can order disclosure in limited situations, but that confidentiality is why police typically withhold the names of suspects under 18 while their cases move through the juvenile system, according to the Juvenile Court Act.
The Chicago Police Department says the investigation remains active, and area detectives continue to follow leads. Authorities have not released further information about a possible motive or any potential co-defendants.
