A Wednesday morning trip to the bank in Hoffman Estates turned tense after a man allegedly pulled a gun during a robbery attempt, only to end up in handcuffs before he could get out the door. Police say officers rushed to the Huntington Bank branch at 1485 W. Palatine Road just after 9:15 a.m., went inside and detained a suspect right there in the lobby. No one was hurt, and the investigation is still underway.
Police Response and Arrest
Officers from Hoffman Estates and neighboring Inverness responded after callers reported that a man had shown a firearm and demanded cash from bank tellers, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Police say responding officers entered the bank and took the man into custody inside the branch before the situation could escalate.
The Daily Herald reports that officers arrived at the scene in about a minute after the call went out, quickly found the suspect and arrested him without any further incident. According to the paper, the man was then turned over to the FBI, and federal charges are expected as investigators continue to sort through what happened.
Community Alert and Witnesses
The Hoffman Estates Police Department pushed out a community notification stating there was a "person in custody" and assuring residents there was no ongoing threat to the public, Patch reports. Witnesses told dispatchers that a gun had been displayed during the attempted robbery, and police are asking anyone who saw anything or has additional information to contact investigators.
Federal Involvement and Next Steps
Following the arrest, the suspect was handed over to the FBI, which is now taking the lead on the case. The FBI notes that it typically leads bank robbery investigations and works alongside local law enforcement in violent incidents or cases involving federally insured financial institutions.
What Authorities Say Now
Officials have not released the man’s name or detailed the exact charges he may face, saying only that the investigation remains active. This story will be updated as the FBI or Hoffman Estates police release additional information.
