A 14-year-old girl reported missing from San Diego was found safe Wednesday night in a Santa Ana motel room after a multi-agency human trafficking task force tracked her to the California Lodge and arrested a 21-year-old man. Santa Ana officers and the city's code-enforcement team helped zero in on the room where authorities say the teen was being held, and officials said the minor was transported to receive medical care and victim services as the investigation continues.
How officials say the rescue unfolded
According to the Santa Ana Police Department, the operation involved a human trafficking task force made up of U.S. Marshals and the Los Angeles Police Department. Santa Ana police said officers and code-enforcement personnel identified the specific room at the California Lodge, and an investigative team located the victim and an adult male suspect inside; the task force arrested a 21-year-old at the scene. LAPD transported the girl to safety, and detectives said they are continuing to follow leads.
Crackdowns and rescues in the region
The recovery is part of a string of coordinated, cross-jurisdictional efforts to locate minors and dismantle trafficking networks across Southern California. A March operation led by the U.S. Marshals and local task forces recovered dozens of missing teens, the Los Angeles Times reported. Local advocates and task-force data also note that children are an increasing share of trafficking victims in Orange County; Spectrum News reported the county task force finds the average victim age is 14.
What's next and where to get help
Santa Ana police said the investigation remains active and urged anyone with information to contact detectives; the department did not immediately release additional details about potential charges, per its advisory.
