First responders pulled the remains, identified only as an adult male, from the water and turned them over to the medical examiner. According to ABC4, the discovery was reported Sunday morning, and West Valley City police officers worked alongside fire personnel to recover the body from the canal. The station reports that the remains were then handed off to the county medical examiner for further review.
Police: Investigation ongoing
Detectives with the West Valley City Police Department say they are working to identify the victim and piece together a timeline of what led up to the discovery. "The body was turned over to the medical examiner," department spokesperson Roxeanne Vainuku told ABC4, as officers continued searching the area and interviewing people in the neighborhood.

Water can make it harder to determine both identity and cause of death, and West Valley City has dealt with similar cases in recent years.
