Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say a recent sweep in the Hickory Grove division turned up a juvenile suspect, a stolen gun and a stash of hard drugs, all in one afternoon.

The department's Southwest Service Area Crime Reduction Unit executed two search warrants in Hickory Grove on March 25, arresting one juvenile and pulling suspected narcotics, cash and firearms out of the neighborhood. Officers reported recovering suspected cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl, along with a device described as a full-auto conversion switch and two handguns, one of which was confirmed stolen. According to the department, the juvenile now faces multiple trafficking and property-related charges.

In a post by CMPD News, the department said officers seized about 226.9 grams of suspected cocaine, roughly 14.3 grams of methamphetamine, 13.7 grams of suspected fentanyl and 30.9 grams of marijuana. They also reported more than $4,100 in U.S. currency, two firearms, one confirmed stolen, and a "full auto conversion switch device." CMPD said one juvenile was charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver methamphetamine, trafficking fentanyl and cocaine, possession of a stolen vehicle and stolen firearm, and possession of a weapon of mass destruction. "Great work by our Southwest Service Area (SWSA) Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) team in removing dangerous narcotics and firearms from the streets!" the department wrote.

Operations Fit A Citywide Pattern

The Hickory Grove operation is not a one-off. It follows a series of targeted efforts by CMPD crime units this month that focus on street takeovers and trafficking in busy corridors across the city. As reported in coverage of a recent street takeover in University City, a Northeast Service Area CRU action in late March also turned up multiple firearms and suspected narcotics while officers disrupted a planned takeover event. Together, those operations reflect a strategy of zeroing in on trouble spots, using focused enforcement and traffic stops to pull guns and drugs out of areas that repeatedly generate calls and complaints.

How The Units Work

Crime Reduction Units are CMPD's specialized squads that camp out on persistent problem locations instead of just bouncing from call to call. They coordinate search warrants, traffic enforcement and intelligence-led work with division detectives. The CMPD patrol division map identifies the Southwest Service Area and the Hickory Grove division as the local command that led the March 25 action. The department says CRUs often cross-coordinate across divisions when investigations point to drug trafficking or stolen property, with an eye on repeat offenders and getting weapons off the street before they become part of the next shooting.

Legal Implications

Although the suspect in this case is a juvenile, the charges are no small matter. A juvenile hit with trafficking and possession-related counts can still face serious consequences depending on how prosecutors move forward. State law also treats certain conversion devices and specific weapons under statutes that deal with weapons of mass death and destruction. North Carolina law defines and punishes the unlawful manufacture, assembly or possession of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons and related devices as felony offenses, and additional statutes address "weapon of mass death and destruction" designations. For the statutory language, see the North Carolina General Statutes on weapons of mass destruction.

CMPD's public statements have not included details about the juvenile's identity or specific court dates. The department's official X account also notes that it is not monitored around the clock and directs residents to call 911 for emergencies and 311 for non-emergencies, according to CMPD News. Any further developments in the case are likely to surface through the department's regular communication channels as the charges move through the system.
