Two people were killed Friday afternoon when their car plowed into a parked box truck along Interstate 85 near LaGrange, according to authorities. The violent crash happened around 4 p.m. near Mile Marker 18 and both people inside the passenger car died at the scene.
Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol arrived to find a 2007 Toyota Camry that had smashed into the rear of a disabled 2013 Hyundai box truck on the interstate shoulder. The Camry’s driver and passenger did not survive the impact, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Crash details and response
Investigators say the box truck was fully off the roadway on the shoulder when, for reasons still unclear, the Camry veered into it. The Troup County Sheriff’s Office initially described the stopped vehicle as an 18-wheeler before the Georgia State Patrol clarified it was a 2013 Hyundai box truck. The wreck temporarily shut down two lanes near Mile Marker 18 before traffic was cleared and all lanes were reopened, as reported by Atlanta News First.
Investigation ongoing
The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation and has not yet released the names of the two people killed, pending notification of their families, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Troopers have not said whether speed, impairment or any other factor might explain why the Camry suddenly left the travel lanes and hit the parked truck.
What to watch
The investigation remains active, and officials with both the Georgia State Patrol and the Troup County Sheriff’s Office are expected to release more information as it becomes available. This story will be updated as authorities provide additional details on the cause of the crash and the victims’ identities.
