A late-night trip along St. Charles Rock Road ended in tragedy on April 22 when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in Breckenridge Hills. The collision happened around 9 p.m. in the 9800 block near Wisner Road and pulled first responders to the busy Rock Road corridor. Investigators confirmed the crash left one person dead.
According to FOX 2, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the driver stayed at the scene, and the crash is still under investigation. Crews remained on Rock Road into the night as authorities collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Rock Road's safety record
St. Charles Rock Road, also known as Route 180, has long been flagged as one of St. Louis County’s most dangerous stretches for people on foot. In its 2023 crash report, Trailnet lists the corridor among the top locations in the county for pedestrian collisions and fatalities.
Planned improvements near the scene
State project documents outline a Route 180 Sidewalk & Pavement Project that would add sidewalks, curb ramps and pavement work along the Breckenridge Hills segment of Rock Road. Maps posted by MoDOT show the project covering the area around the 9600 block and highlight targeted improvements for people walking.
Investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and local police continue to examine the crash and have not released additional details, according to FOX 2. Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities as the investigation moves forward.
