Just after midnight on Friday, a high‑risk search warrant at a Salt Lake City home near 4900 South and 800 East ended with police shooting a person inside. Officers said the warrant targeted suspected drug and weapons activity.
The person who was shot received first aid at the scene, was taken to a hospital, and is expected to survive. The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave while another agency investigates, and the Unified Police Department has been tapped to lead that review.
What police say
According to FOX 13 News, Salt Lake City Police Department officials said they were serving a high‑risk search warrant when the shooting happened, but did not explain how the person was struck.
FOX 13 News also reported that investigators have not released the person’s name and described the warrant as tied to suspected drug and weapon charges.
Investigation and protocol
The Salt Lake City Police Department says placing an involved officer on paid administrative leave is a routine step after an officer‑involved shooting while the facts are sorted out.
The department’s Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigative Protocol explains that its goal is “to ensure compliance with Utah Code Annotated 76‑2‑408(5) along with ensuring every investigation of an Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) is conducted professionally, thoroughly, and impartially,” according to the department. For more on that process, see the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Who will lead the inquiry
FOX 13 News reported that the Unified Police Department will conduct an independent review of the shooting.
The Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake handles multi‑jurisdictional investigations in Salt Lake County and coordinates with prosecutors and other agencies. Authorities have not announced any charges and said they will release additional details as the inquiry continues.
