Austin is moonlighting as the nation’s comedy capital this week as the Moontower Comedy Festival blankets downtown with headliner shows, podcast tapings and late-night club sets. The festival runs April 8 through 13 and splits its offerings between single-ticket headliner nights at the bigger houses and a four-day club binge next Wednesday through Saturday (April 15 through 18). For anyone trying to mainline as much stand-up as possible, the Club Badge is about as close as it gets to a backstage pass, with access to more than ten walkable venues and a shot at sampling over 100 comics in one very long weekend.
Tori Schulze, the festival’s marketing manager, walked through what is on tap with local hosts, according to CBS Austin. She explained that headliners will take over the Paramount and State theatres on Congress Avenue, while the club series spreads smaller shows, podcast parties and late-night sets across downtown. "There truly is something for everyone," Schulze told the station, from podcast die-hards to casual fans who just want a strong drink and a stronger punchline.
How to fest
The festival essentially offers two game plans: buy single tickets for the big headliners or grab a Club Badge for full access to the April 15 through 18 club run, according to the festival’s How To Fest guide. Moontower's festival FAQ notes that badgeholders get presale access to headliner seats and priority entry at club rooms, while single-ticket buyers can be turned away if a venue hits capacity. Wristband types, refund rules and age restrictions vary by show, so organizers urge would-be attendees to double-check the festival pages before heading out.
Headliners to watch
The schedule mixes big-name comics with a few curveballs. Marc Maron, Kathy Griffin and Leslie Jones are among this year’s marquee acts, and the lineup also includes Albert Brooks in a rare live appearance in conversation with Kevin Pollak, according to reporting by the Express-News. The slate ranges from polished hour-long specials at the Paramount to looser, experimental or improv-heavy sets in tiny rooms, so you can stitch together a completely different night every evening. Organizers caution that the most popular headliner seats are moving quickly.
Local showcases and late-night finds
Moontower also leans into Austin’s own comedy scene, programming rooms that spotlight homegrown talent. Shows like Slide in the DMs and The Texans put local comics on lineups alongside touring acts, KUT reports. Local producers say the club series is where you are most likely to stumble into a surprise drop-in or a podcast taping that turns into the story you tell your friends for the next month. To get the full effect, veterans recommend leaving some flex time in your night for venue hopping and last-minute discoveries.
What to know before you go
Festival organizers advise planning around short windows between shows. Doors typically open 30 to 60 minutes before start time, venues have their own bag policies, and ADA accommodations differ from house to house, with badgeholders generally getting priority entry, according to the festival’s official guidance. For the latest ticket availability, badge pickup hours and venue rules, check the Moontower pages on the Paramount site or contact the box office directly. If you are downtown for the busiest nights, allow 20 to 30 minutes to move between rooms and factor in lines for after-parties so you are not sprinting down Congress with a half-finished drink and a fading phone battery.
