A Friday morning crash at one of Plymouth’s busier intersections turned fatal, leaving one driver dead and another injured and shutting down key roads as investigators picked through the wreckage.
Police say two cars collided at the intersection of Plimoth Patuxet Highway and State Road just before 10 a.m. Both drivers were hurt badly enough that officers immediately called for medical aid, and one of the motorists later died from their injuries. Crews blocked off the area and diverted traffic while first responders and accident investigators worked the scene.
What we know so far
According to Boston 25 News, officers were dispatched to the intersection shortly before 10 a.m., where they found both drivers in need of immediate medical attention. One of those drivers later died, Boston 25 reported. Police have not yet released the names of the people involved or any additional identifying details, and town officials warned drivers to brace for significant delays in the area.
NBC Boston reported that the crash came in at about 9:45 a.m. and said one of the drivers was taken from the scene to a hospital. NBC noted that State Road northbound was shut down at Beaver Dam Road and that the Plimoth Patuxet Highway southbound at State Road was also blocked while emergency crews worked. Authorities have not said what led to the collision or whether any charges might be filed, and state or local investigators are leading the inquiry.
Intersection history and safety
The State Road and Plimoth Patuxet Highway crossing has already been on the town’s radar in recent planning discussions. A Plymouth Select Board agenda lists that intersection among several targeted for redesigns, traffic signal reviews and other safety upgrades aimed at cutting down on crashes. Town officials have floated potential fixes that include tweaking signal timing and improving sight lines as part of a broader push to make State Road safer.
Closures and what drivers should know
Plymouth police warned that the road closures could last for an extended period and urged motorists to find alternate routes, according to Boston 25 News. Drivers who have to pass near the scene should expect heavy delays and follow instructions from officers and emergency personnel on site. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact the Plymouth Police Department, and the investigation remains active.
