Federal authorities are looking into the sudden death of Roberto Daniel Garcia Jacobo, 24, who was found unresponsive at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown San Diego shortly after 9:30 AM last Saturday. Staff began life‑saving measures inside the federal lockup, and emergency medical personnel were called in, but officials say Garcia Jacobo was later pronounced dead.
Federal Statement From Inside The Lockup
According to 10News, MCC spokeswoman Brittney Potes said employees discovered Garcia Jacobo unresponsive and immediately started life‑saving efforts. “Emergency medical services were requested while life-saving efforts continued,” she said. EMS ultimately pronounced him deceased, and the FBI was notified, according to the statement.
Case Background And Facility Details
Garcia Jacobo had been sentenced in the Southern District of California to a 24‑month prison term for importation of methamphetamine and had been in custody at MCC since Sept. 11, 2025, according to AOL, which cited a Department of Justice release. The Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown San Diego is an administrative‑security facility operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Investigations And Federal Oversight
The FBI’s notification means federal investigators will review the circumstances surrounding the death, and cases like this can also draw oversight from the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General. In a February 2024 evaluation, the OIG found shortcomings in emergency response, recordkeeping and mental‑health screening at Bureau of Prisons institutions that have contributed to preventable inmate deaths, and it recommended improved training and after‑action reviews to address those gaps; see the OIG report.
What Comes Next In The Probe
Officials did not immediately release a cause of death or next‑of‑kin information in the initial statement, 10News reports. Autopsy results and any investigative findings will determine whether the FBI, the OIG or other federal agencies open a formal inquiry.
