Portland Police have released a photo of a man they say could be key to solving a sexual assault case that has been hanging over the city since the summer of 2022. The attack happened after a birthday celebration at a business in the 8000 block of Southeast 17th Avenue on July 24, 2022. Investigators say one of the men at the gathering left with a woman and later went to a nearby apartment complex, where the alleged assault occurred. Detectives are now asking the public to take a close look at the image and speak up if they recognize him.
What police released
According to investigators, the man is described as about six feet tall and roughly 190 pounds, with blue eyes and blonde hair. At the time of the incident, he was believed to be between 28 and 30 years old. Police say that on the day of the assault he wore a teal T-shirt, beige shorts and a teal Carhartt hat. Portland Police released the photo Monday and urged anyone with information to email [email protected] and reference case number 22-207193, according to KATU.
How the Sex Crimes Unit investigates
The Portland Police Bureau's Sex Crimes Unit is the team that takes on reports of sexual violence in the city, including cases that have gone cold or stalled for lack of leads. The bureau explains on its public information page that the unit coordinates investigations, manages evidence and handles detective follow-up, and that it can be contacted through the Detective Division for case updates. Details on how the unit operates and how to reach them can be found on the Portland Police Bureau Sex Crimes Unit page.
Why police circulated the image this week
Detectives say they decided to put the image back in front of the public this week in hopes of shaking loose new tips in a years-old case. KATU reported that the bureau published the photo on April 13, 2026, and noted that there were no arrests or charges tied to the person of interest at the time of that report. Investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the man or who might have been in the area that night to contact police.
If you have information
Anyone with tips is asked to email [email protected] and reference case number 22-207193, or reach out to the Detective Division for additional information. If someone's immediate safety is at risk, call 911. Survivors looking for support or guidance can also connect with resources through the Portland Police Sex Crimes Unit.
