A man was found shot to death inside a car along the South Side stretch of DuSable Lake Shore Drive on Tuesday morning, turning a routine commute corridor into a crime scene, police said.
Officers responded around 8:30 a.m. to the 8600 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, where they discovered the man unresponsive inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the victim's age and identity remain unknown.
What police say
According to the Chicago Sun‑Times, the man was found inside the car with several gunshot wounds and could not be revived. Detectives from the Chicago Police Department's Area 2 bureau have opened a homicide investigation into the killing.
Where this fits in the city's violence picture
The killing comes as Chicago has seen gun violence tick upward in recent weeks. WTTW News reports that the city recorded 41 homicides in March, a 17% increase from March 2025, along with year-over-year rises in both shooting incidents and shooting victims.
Evidence-based responses
Researchers and violence reduction experts continue to push for approaches they say have real data behind them rather than quick political fixes. In testimony to the Illinois House, the University of Chicago Crime Lab highlighted strategies such as impulse-control curricula and focused outreach in known violence hotspots as practical tools for communities and policymakers looking to blunt these kinds of shootings.
Investigation continues
Area 2 detectives are leading the investigation and have released no information about a possible suspect or motive. As reported by the Chicago Sun‑Times, the case remains open and authorities have not announced any arrests.
